Kay Greyfield vanished in the Danakil Depression. His parents held a funeral without a body. His friends flew home.

Time runs unevenly between the worlds. One day below is a month above. Every hour Aren spends learning what he is costs his mother a season of not knowing, and above him the surface has begun building cities that can be sealed from the outside.
The mechanism that once held the two rhythms in measure was carried out of Hekaira eight centuries ago and never came back. Aren means to bring it home. He has stopped believing that being right is enough, and he has started to learn that everything he mends, somebody else pays for.
