Still tugs at the heartstrings

Sara and her husband Luke are worlds apart. He's into science, logic, and running his high-tech business. She's an artist and a romantic. They got married anyhow, and he drove her away - or she ran away - depending on who's telling the story. Now Sara's sold a beloved painting and Luke's finally tracked her down in Key West, where he's surprised to find her with twin children, one of whom needs an operation. Luke insists that she come home for many reasons : To visit his grandfather, Elijah, who is old and might not last much longer. To take Toby, her son, to the best surgeon for an expensive operation on his leg. To be with her children which he threatens to take away from her. Sara finds that she has no choice but to face all the problems that she tried to leave behind. The secondary characters abound in this book and are mostly strong: Elijah, the grandfather; Gray, the long-time housekeeper; Jessica, Luke's scheming assistant; Rufus, the artist Luke thought Sara was having an affair with; and other business associates and family friends. Luke has to choose between obsessing with his work life and putting in enough energy to have a family; he also has to learn not to ignore the social undercurrents at work. Sara has to learn to stand up for herself not just say 'I won't stay with a man who can't trust me.' A good read.
