This is the second book by Nancy Cato that I have read. I searched down "All the Rivers Run" about 15 years ago after watching a mini-series on TV, but didn't realize Cato had written so many other books until now. Her writing is beautiful, and captures the harshness and beauty of the the Austrailian continent. This book is about a nurse who takes a position in the outback just prior to WWI, and ends up marrying a rancher, moving to his ranch in the middle of the Queensland desert. She falls in love with the life and the country, at the same time realizing that the elements are unforgiving in this desolate part of the world. Reminds me of another wonderful book about this time era by Beverly Hughesdon, "Song of Songs", which takes place in England. It's too bad more people don't catch on to these wonderful books, which are often classed as romances, but I feel have more substance than the average romance. I would compare these sweeping historical books with "Gone With the Wind" any day.
