Newly-widowed neighbor Carlton Weatherby and seventh-grader Robert Lincoln go from strangers to friends when Robert delivers a "funeral casserole." Over forbidden coffee, Carlton reminisces about the fun he had when working at a local mini-golf course and playing Putt-Putt professionally. Inspired, he builds a replica course in his backyard and enlists Robert and his friends to help.
The dream is realized, and once school is out, the neighborhood comes to enjoy some free mini-golf. Carlton finds purpose in his new life, and Robert finally discovers there's something he's better at than his brother, the genius. Everyone in the neighborhood is happy to have a place where the kids (and some adults) can enjoy the fresh air and spend some time outdoors.
Well, not everyone is happy that the project is such a success...
