Dark humor at its best

I first read this novel in 1986 and found the premise so disturbing that I could not concentrate on the writing and turns of phrases. It is intended to be read with a cynical approach. I am glad I reread it. This book gives new meaning to cliches such as finishing school, dead end, and "Ditch the kids." There is plenty of suspense, but if read the way I just have, the reader will be laughing all the way through.

been re-reading it for 10 years

I find it very interesting that a lot of the reviews for this book have been made by adults commenting about re-reading it years after the fact and still in love with it. There's a shelf of books in my office that I have been re-reading since childhood, books that I can never let go of, that I've bought second copies of 'just in case'. This is one of them.

AWESOME

I have read this book at least 30 times. I first read it when I was 13, in 1983 and it really made me think about who I was and who I wanted to be. I last read it last week at 35 and I am now passing it along to my 13 year old son. It is a book that should be read by everyone, teens and parents alike will get a kick out of this book.

The Grounding of Group 6

This was a super book when I was a teenager. Eventhough that has been some 20 years ago, I remembered this book and title. I let a friend borrow the book back in those days and never got it back, which was a bummer. The reason I bought this book again was for my teenage step daughter to read over summer vacation and as a great book to pass down from generations. It's a book about a group of troubled teens sent off to a new school, after pissing off their parents.

Still reading it after all these years!

While looking through all my old books for favorite authors I once again re-read this book. I am so excited to see that other like myself are re-reading the book in their thirties. This book was great in junior high and just as good in my thirties. I highly recommend this book for teenagers and adults alike!

17 Years Later...

I first read this in 1984, when I was thirteen. I last read it in July 2001, when I was thirty. I couldn't count the times in bewteen. At thirteen, Julian Thompson showed me that books for teenagers didn't have to be kid-stuff. The writing is powerful and swift. I still have my original tattered, dog-eared copy, which I just loaned to my fourteen year old step-daughter. The term "loaned" was not used loosely--I want this one back. Buy it for your kids, but be sure you read it first.
