When Sophie Thurnham set off on a 2,000-mile journey from the south of Spain to Rome, on foot with a donkey and assorted dogs for company, she fondly imagined it would be a varefree romp over the hills. It was to turn into an adventure at once more harrowing -- and more joyous -- than anything fiction could contrive. She was imprisoned. Thieves tried to steal her donkey; vandals set fire to her tent. She frequently lost her way. A beautiful blonde 22-year-old, she was constantly plagued by the lewd attentions of men and acquired a Doberman for protection. At the end of it all, she was received by the Pope in Rome, having had the time of her life. Born in 1967, Thurnham grew up in England's Lake District. After getting a law degree, she decided to take a break before continuing her studies. What a break it turned out to be! A compulsively readable book with fine illustrations.
