The Good Burn: a memoir

I was 37 years old and hadn't seen my dad, Ray, in twenty years, when my wife insisted I seek him out. I found him in the Adirondack region of northern New York. After a couple of very brief visits, I decided to join him for a 6-day road trip from Syracuse, NY to the small town of Bucerias, on the west coast of Mexico, in an effort to get to know him. My goal was to learn about his life and, with any luck, like him.

Due to Ray's poor health, which was declining by the mile, the goal of reaching Bucerias was derailed. I was totally unprepared for his mysterious health crisis at the border, and the chaos that followed. However, the goal of getting to know him better was much more than I bargained for.

The Good Burn explores forgiveness, second chances and the idea that, even in absence, a parent somehow influences who we become.
