Yes, Dear

Tony Dear's droll, encyclopedic compendium of golf covers everything from sand shots to sandbaggers (known as "bandits" in his native UK). Into some very fundamentally sound instruction and exposition of golf culture, he sprinkles witty personal anecdotes and dollops of opinion. He discusses what to wear and what not to; how to play with your boss;in a pro-am; in a match; with your buddies ("mates") and with your wife. Each of the 101 Golden Rules of Golf (there are actually more, tucked into sidebars) fits on a page or two, making the narratives tight and memorable. Maybe because the author's British, the tone is authoritative without being arrogant, and humorous without hinting of hubris. Most golf books promise to fix your swing, or enlighten you on the game's "mysteries." And most fall woefully short. This one, however, is a keeper--a concisely written, cleanly illustrated volume that will enlighten and entertain all levels of duffer for years to come.

Dear in the (Golf) Spotlight

A British expat now living in the Pacific Northwest, Tony Dear not only knows how to swing a golf club (he was an amateur player of some renown back home), he knows the ins and outs of the world's greatest game more thoroughly and with a more refined-yet-folksy take on its history and quirks than many overpaid TV announcers. In this nifty guide to everything from etiquette to fashion to architecture to simple swing and mental tips, Dear doles out his self-deprecating and witty wisdom like a master chef would a $100 nouvelle meal -- in tantalizingly brief yet soul-filling doses. I've read hundreds of golf books and more than a few of them are nothing more than sleep aides or overly technical jargon-juiced wastes of time. Dear gets right to the point, makes it with a sense of fun and wonder, then moves on. This is great stuff for golfers of any ability or interest level.
