At Pentecost, men from fifteen nations heard the gospel in the language they were born speaking. Luke says it three times in six verses so nobody could miss it. That was the gift.

By the fourth century Augustine wrote that it had passed away. For fifteen hundred years it surfaced only at the margins. Then in 1901 it came back, taught as real foreign languages, given so missionaries could sail without studying a word. The founder of modern Pentecostalism said so in the newspapers, with his name attached.

Between 1906 and 1908, that claim was tested on three mission fields. It failed. What replaced it was written in 1907 by a stranded missionary in Calcutta who had just discovered he could not speak the language he believed God had given him.

Nobody in the pews is told any of this.
