The Funk in the Trunk
Eliza just moved to a brand new town. A brand new house. A brand new school. And in all that new, her voice went quiet.
At home she's Ellie - the one who sings too loud and fills every room with noise. But here, surrounded by faces she doesn't know yet, she can't find the sound that's hers.
Then one day at school, in the middle of a lesson, Eliza drifts off into her imagination. She wanders onto the golden Savannah in her favourite elephant onesie, and meets a lion cub with a trombone, a monkey with a drum kit, a snake shaking a rattle, a giraffe blowing a saxophone - each one certain of their sound. Eliza tries theirs on for size. None of them fit.
Until she finds an old trunk half-buried in the grass, its clasps catching the light. Inside: a golden trumpet, waiting.
The Funk in the Trunk is a story about the voice you already have - the one that goes quiet in new rooms, and how to trust it's still there, waiting to be found. For every child who's ever felt too shy, too new, or too different to speak up, this is a reminder: your sound was never lost. It was just waiting for you to look.
