Hugh Dalziel wrote under the name Corsincon, judged widely, and was among the most quoted canine authorities of his generation. The Fox Terrier, published in 1888 in L. Upcott Gill's Monographs on British Dogs, treats the breed at the height of its dominance - history and origins, the points as the ring then read them, the smooth-coated and wire-haired varieties handled separately, breeding, the rearing of puppies, preparation for exhibition, and coursing.

The original edition carried a colour frontispiece, engraved plates and two fold-out pedigree charts tracing the foundation sires behind both varieties. Its reputation as the standard manual on the breed has never really been displaced.
