I can highly recommend The Fourth Scroll on multiple levels. On the surface, it is a solid adventure without the explosions and bombastic characterizations one finds in the typical thriller. Two brothers are drawn into the pursuit of a valuable artifact and soon find themselves chased by forces unknown. The plot moves along nicely and I found myself quickly turning pages in anticipation of the next challenge or crisis. It is easy to enjoy this book on just this level. But on a deeper plane, the book is about the confrontation between good and evil, or better said, between man's spiritual strength and material weakness. It presents the spiritual questions - what is truly of value, how much are you willing to sacrifice for what is right and good. It causes the reader to question prior beliefs on the nature of existence and how good and evil began. What makes this aspect so enjoyable is that these questions are not presented as a treatise or sermon, but rather nicely positioned in the context of an exciting adventure. This does not read like a first novel. The scene construction is intelligent and mature. The reader can feel the environment without having to endure trivial detail. The characters are thoughtfully developed and interesting to know. These are real people, not stereotypes or facades. You get to know them by their thoughts and actions throughout the book. They have a full range of real emotions. The good people are good without being superheroes. The bad guys are definitely bad, but still really human. This was a fun yet thought provoking read. I look forward to the next chapter in the story.
