Some scars wound too deeply to heal

BACK COVER (COMPLETE): Amber's once lithe body had been crippled and disfigured by a horrible accident. The prospect of never walking again disheartened her, but much worse was the pain she felt when her fiance suddenly abandoned her. Time had done nothing to heal her broken heart. And although she could walk again, resuming her nursing career was out of the question. Then a stranger offered her employment, a home and the money for a necessary operation. All she had to do was become his wife! REVIEW: The majority of this story is set in England's beautiful Lake District, situated in the northwestern part of the country. It contains England's largest national park, its biggest lakes, and the world's oldest mountains. Amber has been jilted by her fiance after a disfiguring accident, and has traveled to the Lake District for a job interview with a school. Not only had she been a nurse, but she was a qualified teacher as well. Unfortunately, the school will not accept her as they feel the results of her accident will impede her ability to keep up with active children. Dejected, she is walking back to the train station in the rain when she is almost run over by Joel Sinclair, our hero. Joel is angry with what appears to be her carelessness, and when he realizes that she is actually injured (recovering) he hires her to take care of his son Paul, who is suffering from a similar injury incurred in a car crash with his mother, Terry. Terry is an American woman who has abandoned Paul to his father and returned to California. For some reason, possibly to get back at her former husband, Terry is threatening to sue for child custody, and Joel and Amber marry for convenience. They travel to California when Terry's father--a nice guy and Paul's grandfather--suffers a heart attack. Throughout their marriage, Joel and Amber fight their attraction, although both have been burned by love and are not looking for a permanent relationship. I won't give the end away, but it is worth the read to find out how the conflicts are resolved. This was one of my very first Penny Jordan novels, and it's been on my shelf since 1983, and when I need a really lovely story help me over a bad day, this is the story that I read again and again. Enjoy it!
