Here is an excerpt from The First Time I Rode a Freight Train & other hitchhiking stories:
"Marty the Stonemason"
"A week ago I hitchhiked out of Jackson [Wyoming] and this guy picked me up. I listened to him talk for a few minutes and then I said that he had picked me up before---three years ago outside of Dillon, Montana. He looked at me and said something like, 'Hey, you're that hitchhiker I picked up.' He then repeated what I had said three years ago---something about being led by the Holy Spirit. I remember when I met him up in Montana it seemed that he thought it was very peculiar that I was 'obeying the Lord' and 'being led by the Holy Ghost.'
"His name was Marty and he worked as a stonemason in the Jackson area. He told me that when I first met him he was drinking a lot and doing drugs and that this his life was a mess. Then he said that three months ago he became born again---he even showed me his Bible. I was pretty happy for him and I shook his hand. He dropped me off between the Wilson Bridge and Wilson and I proceeded to walk up the road toward Teton Pass."
