Book Overview

The Farm by John Shader is a series of autobiographical vignettes that tell a love story-a love for a special place. Each chapter is a reminiscent retelling of events occurring at Grandpa Brown's 160-acre Michigan "playground". Beginning with boyhood stories and strong themes of family, friendship, and adventure, the book progresses forward through a series of flashbacks amidst the lingering question... should the family allow the farm to be sold? Shader delights the reader with humorous stories of snipe hunting, a kid's system of classifying insects, and touching moments of hunting with his father. The reader will laugh and cry as they experience the life of a boy growing up in a loving family in the 1960's and meeting a place that shaped his journey into manhood more than any other... The Farm.

How I loved "The Farm" by John Shader

"The Farm" is a warm, comical, and heartwarming story about one man's experiences at his boyhood Farm. I loved the book because it reminded me of my own childhood experiences during the same era. Mr. Shader shares his story in such a way that you feel like you are right there with him experiencing what he did. It showed how important relationships are and the memories we have of those days gone by. Mr. Shader always seems to be in trouble even though he isn't at fault most of the time! I laughed out loud when he mentioned "cut-rite wax paper", which I remember vividly in the 60's as my mom used it to wrap our sandwiches. John even remembered the small, trivial things to make a point in his story. He had a wonderful relationship with his Dad and his good friends, Pete and Don. How meaningful that Farm was to him and how he agonized over ever losing it. It was well written and kept you excited about going on to the next chapter to find out what happened. I highly recommend it for those of you who grew up in the late 60's and 70's. It will tickle your funny bone and even make you cry!
