The Mars Bluff Incident of 1958 remains one of the most unusual accidents in military history. A U.S. Air Force B-47 Stratojet accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb on the small, rural town of Mars Bluff, South Carolina. Though the bomb lacked its fissile core and did not trigger a nuclear explosion, the conventional explosives within the weapon detonated upon impact, leaving a 35-foot-wide crater and severely damaging the home of Walter Gregg and his family.
