It's quite a world Mezo depicted here... people able to live for hundreds of years through a treatment called Longlife... a galaxy ruled in effect by clone servants... And one clone seems to be breaking from her present patterns. That clone is Areia Darenga, captain of the 231. First she suspects Ambassador Seldoldon of treachery when aberrations are detected on the the Longlife source planet of M'dia, inciting the ambassador's old hatred for her. Then after things are shown in their true light, it turns out that Seldoldon is in love with her. Problem is, so is the patrolman she saved and survived with on M'dia! Even worse, she finds herself in love with them when she shouldn't, since she's a programmed clone! But before she could pull her hair in frustration, an enemy comes, and she has to put aside those personal problems to fight against would-be tyrants of the universe. A typical clone's life. It's quite a female-perspective story with some feminism quietly put in (like having women as the captains of spaceships). But it's a good story, and you'll wonder why Areia does the things she does.
I agree with the others - this is a great series!

Somebody contact this author! I also have been looking for years for more from this author. How imaginative...the characters are wonderful. Flawed and heroic at the same time.
I loved the book and the series.

The whole series is beautifully written and I can't recommend the author highly enough. I have looked for other books by her for years but have found none. Surely this type of talent must write again!
Excellent SF high adventure

Fall of Worlds is a little known trilogy that is exceptionally well-written and entertaining. It concerns a far-future interstellar society governed by "Maintainers" of several clone lines, who receive special long-life treatment and are effectively immortal. Many people resent their rule, and feel long-life should be available to everyone. The story revolves around Areia Darenga, beautiful Maintainer clone bred as a space commander, and Seldoldan, a leader of one world in the Federation, who has bitterly opposed her since he was a boy. Maintainers are celibate, forbidden relationships, and ruled by self-discipline. Seldoldan is passionate in his personality and his politics, and the two clash. This conflict is given poignancy by the fact that Areia has known Seldoldan since infancy, and once carried him to bed when he'd fallen asleep in his father's lap! Meanwhile, sinister political forces and threat of interstellar war simmers in the background, woven with threads of alien mysticism. A great read!
