Immigrant cooking

This is a book filled with wonderful, 'real traditional' recipes. While my family came through Ellis Island from Hungary I enjoyed reading other country's recipes and plan on trying many of them. The history of Ellis Island that is included is fascinating and something we should all know about as Americans. I am planning on giving this book as a gift for several friends and family mambers.

A really good peek into the Immigrant Experience.

"The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook" should be required reading for any descendant of 19th century or 20th century Immigrants. The first chapter of the book tells 'The Story of Ellis Island', with photos and drawings. Throughout the book the photos and drawings of immigrant scenes and of immigrants are informative and evoke wonder at the daring of our ancestors. There also are hundreds of recipes in chapters devoted to specific areas of Europe and with proper homeland identification. Many of the recipes are very simple. However, authentic meals from most of the various homelands can be prepared from them. There are individual stories of immigrants. And, some very helpful text and illustrations about Ellis Island, Geneolgical searches, recording family history, making oral histories and other helpful notions, such as collecting family recipes. Finally, there is a decent index of recipes. I recommend this cookbook and informations source highly.
