Some therapies don't heal. They digest.
Hendrick doesn't stop at the bakery window for the pastries. He stops for the reflection-that softened, gourdlike outline he can neither claim nor look away from. A former wrestler with a profitable trade, a solitary man with money and no one worth spending it on, he has settled into a life shaped by cravings he can't control and a body he no longer recognizes.
Saturday mornings, he enters the Warren-an unmarked, repurposed building where the desperate come to be held. In a room washed in magenta light, a woman named Klavdiya presses her breath against his and asks him to name what he wants. Reclamation, he tells her. To inhabit his own skin again.
She offers him something more generous than that. And far less kind.
Beneath the therapy rooms, beneath the rituals of skin and breath, the Warren keeps deeper quarters-places where appetite and flesh arrive at their own agreement, and where the word renewal means exactly what it sounds like, down to the marrow.
