In 1832, celebrated Parisian dressmaker Jeanne Villepreux-Power discovers a creature with a delicate shell in a tidepool on the coast of Sicily. When the scientific establishment mocks her belief that the Paper Nautilus makes its own shell, Jeanne decides to prove them wrong by doing the impossible. She has a plan to bring the living sea indoors. With the assistance of Elias Thorne, an enigmatic traveller whose knowledge of glass, metals, and transformation reaches far beyond ordinary craft, she battles shattered tanks, hostile academics, and the limits of her own confidence to create the world's first aquarium. Inspired by the remarkable life of a pioneering naturalist, this is a story about courage and belief in the unseen structures of the world.
