Looking at the statistics, Austria is undoubtedly a country of immigration. More people move to the country each year than leave it. Birth rates are also a significant indicator that there will be an increasing number of people with a migrant background in this country in the future. The Turkish community constitutes the largest group of non-Tyroleans from third countries. In addition to new arrivals, numerous people with a Turkish migration background have already settled in Austria and have come together in various clubs and associations, amongst other things. Cultural differences and language barriers often make it difficult to foster mutual understanding and rarely allow for deep insights into the work and organisational structures of these associations. Added to this is a certain distance caused by a possible fear of the unknown, perhaps fuelled by half-knowledge or even a lack of transparency. This work examines the history of migration, its development and the terminology that arises in this context. It outlines the current situation and aims to help advance the dialogue.
