The thrilling sequel to the critically acclaimed "The Seer King". Ten years ago, General Damastes pledged eternal loyalty to the wizard Tenedos, and to the Seer's vision of a unified, peaceful Numantia. But after Tenedos became emperor, the provinces were conquered and peace never came. Now the emperor has amassed an army for war, and Damastes uncovers dark, horrifying secrets about the man he's sworn to serve.

Amazing and truely brilliant!! A++++

I have never read a more fasinating book. One of the greatest fantasy authors of our time. Rober Jordan and others such as Tolkien can not compare to Bunch's vision. His writing is like poetry, while your reading you can clearly see the battle schemes in front of you and can even feel his characters' passion. Chris Bunch has done it again and I can't wait to see what glories you have for us in the furture.

A Unique, Atypical Fantasy/Military Book

I am an avid military history and fantasy reader. Often the two genres don't mix, so I was pleasantly surprised when I read the series. It is doesn't follow the typical prosaic path of the average fantasy and it is able to suspend reality a bit more than the typical military history book. The book was much more gritty and graphic than a typical fantasy- which is nice considering that much of fantasy is written for a teen crowd, and as I am older now, I desire a bit more. The book took me through the gamut of emotions - I thouroughly enjoyed the book, and just reread it for the second time in 3 years. It was just as enjoyable the second time. The only other book I have read recently that goes into the darker parts of fantasy as does this series is Mathew Woodring Stover's "Heroes Die". If you liked that, you will definately like this as well.

A bit kinky, but still a good read

Never one to shy away from a gratuitous sex scene, the author still manages to weave a compelling story of love, war, faith, and betrayal. Not quite as good as the first book in the series (it's tough being the second sibling) but still a satisfying and enjoyable successor to the Seer King.

Simply Beautiful

Wow. Wow. Wow.Chris Bunch with this series has convinced me that he is one of the best fantasy writers of the time. His collaboration with Alan Cole produced some great books. But it was hard to know who was most responsible, him or Cole.This is serious fantasy. Beautifully written and composed. With these kinds of books the genre might be included in main stream literature by all those critics who don't think much of fantasy.With this series Mr. Bunch has joined the elites. If you like Feist, Weis, Gemmel and Jordan, then you would love this book and the previous one, "Seer King."A word of warning though, this book contains more sex than what you are used to in other fantasy works. I wish the next installment will be available sooner. I can't wait.Cheers

A retelling of Napoleon

This book continues with the excellent start provided by the first book in the series, The Seer King. Chris Bunch again uses episodes from the history of tyrants such as Napoleon to again press the same point that absolute power corrupts absolutely that he made in his previous "Sten" series. This is an excellent read based on great historical episodes newly recounted with a fantasy epic twist. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in the study of power and history with the warning that the sex in the book might prove to be a bit too wild for some tastes. All in all Chris Bunch continues on with an excellent book in an excellent series.
