i couldn't put it down!

this is one of those books that you can't stop reading until the final sentence. with every page i became more and more involved with rhona's plight.

Mazel Tov - A Vivid Image of Jewish NYC in the 70s

You know you can't go wrong with the word "deflowering" in the title. What a treat down memory lane to visit Queens in the early 1970s! Great details of Jewish life- from temple bingo games to the deli to the LI ice cream man. Lisa Doctor is a wonderful storyteller and her writing is riveting. I didn't want this book to end! This LI girl related to the setting and she was glad to see Rhona grow as a woman. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Urban fairy tale

Rooted in absolute realism, this book still reads like a modern day fairy tale. Will Rhona end up with her Prince Charming (Jeffrey), or the frog (Stuie)? You just know there's going to be a happy ending somehow -- but for the life of you, you can't imagine how. I was so enchanted I stayed up all night until I found out . . . you will, too.

Hot Diggity Dawg!

"If Millie Rosenblatt hadn't bitten into that empty frankfurter bun without realizing the boiled meat had quietly slipped to the floor and rolled under the table, I might never have left my husband Stuie." And so begins Rhona's struggle to keep the proverbial meat in the bun of life. She is trapped, as we all are, in a set of assumptions surrounded by cultural expectations and self-imposed limitations. How she gets out is a paean to Lisa Doctor's natural storytelling ability and an intimacy with her heroine that only a veteran writer can achieve. I envy those who are about to read it for the first time. Our only hope is that Lisa Doctor is almost finished with her next novel.

Magic carpet ride back in time

Literally brought me back to a more innocent and exciting time in my life. Every Jewish girls neighborhood, every young woman's conflict on love and sex in the 70's. Made me laugh and cry as I became Rhona in a time warp. I picked it up and couldn't put it down until I was done.
