The Dead Letter Office (The Oni Bureau)

THE DEAD DO NOT WRITE LETTERS.

At least, that is what Inspector Saeki tells himself when a grieving widower walks into the Oni Bureau carrying five envelopes tied with string.

The letters are from his wife.

She has been dead for three years.

It is 1926, and Tokyo has rebuilt itself over the ruins of the Great Kantō disaster. New concrete stands where entire streets once burned, trams cross districts that the city would rather forget, and somewhere behind an unremarkable brass plate sits a government office that officially does not exist.

The Oni Bureau deals with the things that cannot be allowed to be true.

Saeki's task should be straightforward. Find the person forging the letters, stop them, write the appropriate report, and preserve the calm.

But the handwriting is perfect. The letters contain memories no stranger could know. Their return addresses belong to streets destroyed three years earlier. Their ink is still wet.

And every eleven days, another arrives.

Saeki's investigation takes him from the rebuilt wards of Honjo to the mediums and spirit-letter merchants of Asakusa, and finally to Reiko, a quiet woman who claims she does not speak for the dead.

She simply carries their letters.

What begins as an investigation into fraud becomes something far more dangerous: a confrontation with a city that has confused forgetting with healing, a government prepared to bury the truth to preserve order, and Saeki's own unanswered letter from a brother who died before their quarrel could be put right.

Because if the dead can write home, then Saeki's brother may still be waiting for an answer.

And some doors are dangerous not because of what might come through them, but because of how badly we want to cross.

The Dead Letter Office is a supernatural mystery set in the haunted streets of 1920s Tokyo, blending historical noir, Japanese ghost story and literary horror into a story about grief, memory, bureaucracy and the terrible difficulty of letting go.

An Oni Bureau Novel from Torii Studios.
