The Day the UN Died

This book takes the reader back to the glory days of the United Nations, the 1950s and early 1960s, when the world looked to the UN to save it from the new and terrifying threat of nuclear war. The book is extremely timely, as we find ourselves facing the same threat again. We are seeing the emergence of a multipolar world where there are many centres of power intensely competing. This has to be managed peacefully: the alternative is a balance of terror where each side is armed to the teeth and any misstep could lead to cycle of escalation ending in nuclear conflict.

In the midst of the Cold War, the Swede Dag Hammarskj ld seemed to bring the sound common sense of his home country with him to the role of UN Secretary-General, and promised to be the harbinger of a better world. In this he had the support of the American President, John F Kennedy. But being a neutral arbiter means that you tread on many toes. This book deals with Hammarskj ld's nearly successful attempt, with Kennedy's help, to end the Cold War in Europe, an attempt cut short by his fatal crash in southern Africa, which remains a mystery. If it was not an accident, who killed him and why? The answer to the Swedish Secretary-General's unfortunate fate may shock anybody who still believes in the essential goodness of the Western powers.
