Among other things, if the writer is to be believed, Custer conspired with mining magnates and renegade Indians to launch a gambling casino in the Black Hills. It would be a place which "indjuns could help run," where "white men cud play at cards," and weary travelers could "enjoy a show with indjuns and others pretendin to" fight.

Walter realizes his promotion will be assured if the journal is authentic and published.

Before he can determine authenticity, Sally is kidnapped, and Walter is pursued by Native American activists and a pro-Custer militia organization. Neither group wants the journal made public.

This inventive, humorous, and unpredictable romp culminates near the Little Big Horn National Battleground on the anniversary of Custer's Last Stand, as Walter, the Indians, and the militia collide.

What a relief--I liked it!

When a life long friend's husband writes a book, you want to be supportive so you buy it. Then with great fear and trepidation you start to read it. Guess what? It's really fun. An intriguing premise starts with a good hook and takes you on a merry chase. Well paced, with well tuned dialogue. A good summer read.

The Custer Conspiracy is a fun, quirky book filled with great characters and surprising plot twists. Mr. Cary's history background is evident as he weaves a very plausible tale pitting the right-wing militia against an equally radical band of Native Americans all intent on preventing the truth from being revealed. Wonderful tongue-in-cheek humor

This is a very funny and entertaining book that would particularly appeal to American History buffs or anyone interested in the Custer mystique. However, I fall into neither of those categories, and I enjoyed this book tremendously. It manages to be fast-moving and entertaining without ever taking itself (or anything else, for that matter) too seriously. Carey does a great job of making this one work. I highly recommend this fun read.
