Excellent value

After working almost 20 years as a (mostly CNC) machinist, I now teach manual and CNC machining to high school 11th and 12th graders. "The CNC Workbook" is a highly valuable resource for introducing CNC knowledge and programming to my students."The CNC Workshop" is priced similar to other CNC training books that don't include any software. However, this book also includes a training CD that works fairly well. One of the features of the CD is simulation software for both lathe and mill. The only CNC simulation software I have found so far that is any better than this one costs $600 for the lathe simulator and another $600 for the mill simulator. To get both of those lathe and mill simulators adds up to more than 20 times the price of "The CNC Workshop."While the book is not perfect, and while the software can be a bit temperamental, this has to be the best CNC training-guide value on the market. The book and software don't replace me as a teacher, but they do make my teaching efforts way more effective. My classroom is a better place because of this book.

Excellent Intro level CNC Self Study Package!!

My background: Who Cares! I work with late model CNC machines and have used several CNC training packages costing thousands of dollars each.Let's start with the pros and cons.CONS:The print quality of the book is terrible compared to first edition that came out. The book wastes print by addressing CAM software not commonly used in the machining industry. The material does not dive extensively into the subject matter. Other than corrections and a software update, this release is identical the first release I bought in 1999. PROS:You may be asking "why five stars?". Simple...it is the CNC bargain of a lifetime. The CD that comes with the book is the real gem. The CD has been updated to run on the latest Windows operating systems.The CD contains an interactive multimedia presentation that covers the basics of CNC. Just put the book away and let the CD educate you on the basics of CNC at your own pace. EIA standard G codes and M codes are presented and animated for both turning and milling operations.Milling and turning simulators are included and are easy to operate. You can experiment all you want on your own computer. You can write simple CNC programs, see your mistakes in the 3D animation and learn by working out the bugs. Avoid cocky instructors or punks in the machine shop that will rub it in if your program doesn't run right.You have to learn the basics before you can dive deep into CNC. There is no easier way to learn CNC basics than by using the multimedia CD included in this package. I am recommending this package as strictly an introductory course. It is perfect for the CNC newby that wants to learn by seeing a task performed and having an opportunity to make mistakes and fix them instead of just reading a boring technical book.FIVE*****STARS!!!!!(At this price it's a steal!)

Uh..Duh..THE PLANET EARTH'S BEST CNC BARGAIN !!!

I am a CNC machinist and also conduct CNC training for my company. No book or CNC simulation program I have ever come across is perfect(the world is not perfect). This book and multimedia CD package is no exception, it has a few flaws. I can live with the flaws because the quality and value of the material is super! Nowhere will you find a CNC training package this good at this ridiculously low price!!!This is not college level text and it shouldn't be. The average machinist reads on a 7th grade reading level. I've used training material costing thousands of dollars and the trainees were so intimidated that half of them struggled. The CNC Workshop package gets rave reviews from the trainees and there is a significant performance increase on the shop floor.One of the best bargains you will ever find!!

WOW Double WOW!!!

WOW double WOW!!! I don't know how these guys do what they have done for the price. First let me say this is a totally unsolicited review of a great training tool. I am journeyman machinist, who teaches CNC operators for a large Fortune 500 company and I also teach at 2 local community colleges. I have over 25 years experience in the field of machining and teaching. One of the colleges recently received a training contract for a small job shop with limited funds, so I got on the net to price a Torcomp product I have used in the past "The CNC Workbook" and I ran across a new product "The CNC Workshop". I sent for a copy figuring same stuff different package, was I shocked, anyone or school with a PC can have a complete CNC training course right out of the box. I have reviewed numerous CNC training materials over the years, and have written my own, but this is the very best ever. I have seen many with prices in the thousands that cannot touch this package. "The CNC Workshop" can be used as part of an instructor lead class or can use by individuals to learn on their own. I am worried about my teaching job once "The CNC Workshop" gets out.
