The Checkout Girl

By Caz Frear

A woman's dangerous obsession threatens to expose her troubled past, in a standalone novel of psychological suspense from the acclaimed author of Five Bad Deeds.

A former HR executive with an upwardly mobile lifestyle in London, Evelyn Meyer now works behind the register at a supermarket ninety minutes outside the big city. She tells people that she grew tired of the rat race and wanted to try something different. The truth, involving an incident with a former colleague, is a bit more complicated.

Far from any friends or family, Evelyn is bored and intensely lonely, with work her only social outlet. And the highlight of each week is seeing JP and Tara, an attractive couple twenty years her junior who regularly pass through her checkout line, chatting with her as they pay for cat food or kitchen cleaner. After a chance meeting in a bar and an offer of a neighborly favor, her relationship with them gets friendlier still--perhaps a bit too friendly.

When a shocking crime occurs, Evelyn uses the fallout to forge an even deeper connection to the couple, and people begin to wonder why she's in their orbit in the first place--and what lengths she'll go to in order to stay there.

In this twisty, intricately plotted psychological thriller in which no one is who they seem, Caz Frear reminds us why she's been called a "must-read for fans of Tana French and Gillian Flynn" (Publishers Weekly).
