Book Overview

Experience the brave dog Buck's classic adventure through the wilderness, reimagined in a graphic novel format perfect for readers 10+

Buck is a 4-year-old shepherd living a pampered life as an estate dog in California. But his life changes forever when he is suddenly kidnapped and sold into service during the Klondike gold rush. Made to haul heavy sleds through the deep snow fields, he realizes that in order to survive in the wild of the Yukon, he'll need to discover and reconnect with the primordial instincts of his ancestry.

Jack London's The Call of the Wild is a masterpiece in both its style, which set a standard for generations to come, and for its genre, raising adventure writing to the level of classic literature. Perfectly blending the original language of the novel with breathtaking, full-color artwork, this striking illustrated edition reinvents Buck's journey as a story for all ages--equal parts exciting and entertaining as it is intelligent and thought provoking.

This edition is one of more than 85 titles Campfire Graphic Novels has published since their introduction to North America in 2010. Featuring gorgeous, sophisticated artwork and lush production values, Campfire Graphic Novels publishes a wide array of distinctive stories ranging from innovative renditions of Western literature's most beloved classics to vibrant and gripping histories.

Buck realizes his potential.

Some see the title “Call of the Wild,” others the actual title “The Call of the Wild.” You might even find “Jack London’s The Call of the Wild.” Then some people illustrate, and/or adapt, even retold. One thing is for sure: the people who make most of the covers have not read the book and do not know what Buck looks like. Gold was found in Alaska, and the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the United States. The environment breeds harsh attitudes. Also, in the testing of one's mettle, one finds their true potential. Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations, finally realizing his potential. On the way, he learns many concepts, from surprise to deceit and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing, he feels the call of the wild. This book is well written. There is no wasted word or thought, and the story, while building on itself, has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild. There are many good movies made based on the book. One such is Jack London's “The Call of the Wild: Dog of the Yukon” [1997] with Rutger Hauer. Illustrated versions may distract from your imagination. - Annotated versions may be opinionated. - Quadrum Solutionized (ripped apart and reassembled their way) - Dalmatian Press Adapted Classic (Diddled Down for the dumb) - Bring the Classics to Life Series (can you say abridged?) - Penguin Readers, Level 2 (ELS and 48 pages shorter) - Fast Track Classics (Simplified Language - Condensed Format - modern English) - Campfire Graphic Novels Series (Rewritten Narrative - adapted and condensed)
