Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer (Iroh’s and June’s Crazy Tea Adven

Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer is an adventure about how Iroh’s past and June’s future intertwine. The day begins like any other inside the Jasmine Dragon. Iroh welcomes his newest customers while boasting about how the Jasmine Dragon serves the finest tea in Ba Sing Se. Zuko’s replacement tea server is Feng, who boasts that they have the best tea in the world. The two teenage boys attest to that statement after they taste the tea. They reveal their admiration for Team Avatar’s adventures and ask Iroh to narrate when he helped save the world. Iroh humbly admits to playing a minor role and says those fighting days are behind him. A commotion outside the shop interrupts Iroh’s conversation with the two young men. Iroh, Feng, and a few customers inspect the noise. A man protests about the Dragon of the West inside the walls of Ba Sing Se: Iroh attempts to resolve the situation over a nice cup of hot tea; however, the man has other plans. It’s a shame when the man is so filled with hatred that he smacks the teacup out of Iroh’s hand. If Zuko were to see this scene, he would be furious. If he weren’t the Fire Lord at this point, he would firebend in anger. Anyway, Iroh’s customers verbally defend him and drive the man away. Someone in a hood watches the scene from afar. After closing hours, Feng informs Iroh about the tea shortage problem within the city. Iroh decides to investigate. Later, Iroh and Feng lock up the shop, and the exact hooded figure rushes to ambush Iroh. Iroh protects himself with some firebending. The person removes her hood, and Iroh recognizes her—it’s June—she intends to collect the bounty on Iroh’s head. A brief battle ensues. It ends when June knocks Iroh out with powdered shirshu venom. When Iroh awakens, his arms are bound as he’s slung over Nyla’s saddle. Ironically, in the first few seconds, Iroh thought he had taken a nap. June enlightens Iroh about the shirshu venom immobilizing him, but refuses to answer his questions, like where they’re going or who ordered Iroh’s bounty. Iroh uses a unique option of persuasion—singing loudly until Nyla whines and June’s patience diminishes. June agrees to answer one question to shut Iroh up. Where are they going? Daxia Harbor, a former Fire Nation colony in the Hu Xin province, is the answer. Daxia Harbor is a hub for unsavory black market deals. It’s also where Iroh could fall in love with all the rare tea leaves. Iroh has a sense that whoever created the bounty for Iroh is someone from his past, someone he’s ready to face. Before they get any further on their trip, Iroh apologizes to June for not giving her the proper respect she deserved the first time they met. Nyla senses intruders. June discovers they’re surrounded by four Viper-Bat bounty hunters who hunt their kind for money. The leader, Yuze, offers June and Nyla the opportunity to join them. June refuses and gets reacquainted with the Viper-Bats through a fight. Despite June’s moves, she winds up cornered. Nyla and Iroh work together using their fighting techniques to save June. Iroh still has some fight left in him. A quick note: The loyalty between June and Nyla is not shown much in the cartoon, whereas in this book, their connection runs deep—especially when June is in trouble. The concern on June’s face when they threaten Nyla is a nice way to show June’s worry for Nyla’s safety. Seeing who they are up against, the Viper-Bats retreat. Iroh vows to travel freely with June if she answers his one question: Who hired June to capture Iroh? June reveals it was the leader of the Wuyi Tea Cartel who controls most of the tea trade throughout the Earth Kingdom and beyond. Iroh believes he can solve both their problems if he travels to Daxia. June unlocks Iroh’s shackles on the promise that Iroh won’t run away. Their simultaneous relief is hysterical. A conversation about how work is scarce for bounty hunters sparks June’s flashback of a family meal. June’s mother is forced to r
