The Bogman: history, sociology or love story?

The historical context for this novel set in 20th century provincial, rural Ireland, belies the extraordinary relevance it has to the state of the human condition. This is one of those novels which subtly interweave levels of meaning, knowledge, and emotionality, all through the standard conventions of plot--ultimately leaving an indelible impression regarding not only the social conditions of the people and period described, but also the universal contradictions which all people must deal with. Highly recommended read.
