Brooke Nichols spent her entire childhood bouncing through states, school districts and more than a few of her parents' ill-conceived "adventures." Now, she's finally found some stability. Engaged to a gorgeous, gainfully employed businessman--who always calls when he says he will--Brooke is eager to settle down once and for all. No alarms, no surprises. Certainly, she would never consider a relationship with someone like her fiancé's best friend, firefighter Jake McBride. With his frequent footloose jaunts and a career that involves leaping into dangerous situations, Jake is everything Brooke's fiancé is not: raw, spontaneous and passionate. But passion isn't everything...is it? As Jake keeps pushing Brooke's boundaries, and her buttons, the girl who hates surprises might just end up surprising everyone, especially herself.
In Texas, as much to escape from her lunatic family as to being the wife to a nice stable person, Katy Chronicles reporter Brooke Nichols looks forward to marrying Everett Nichols. However, her biggest problem is not planning for the wedding or keeping her insane family under control. It is her attraction to the firefighting best man Jake McBride. For an article Brooke accompanies Jake on his job. Watching him, she begins to better understand her family and herself as she begins to comprehend that Jake follows the golden rule in which he owns enough gold to make his own rules. This is an interesting contemporary romance starring a person seeking safe stability after the wild out of control lifestyle of her family and a daredevil who leads head first into danger. The story line is well written, however the treatment of nice Texas Baby Everett by his best friend and his fiancée who leap into each other's arms is inappropriate as he deserves better from them. Readers will enjoy Tanya Michaels' entertaining tale but the third wheel to the triangle was done wrong by those who knew better. Harriet Klausner
Michaels doesn't disappoint

Brooke Nichols is torn between a handsome, successful fiancé and a hunky, unpredictable fireman. Oh, to have such decisions to make--especially when the fireman is Mr. July for the local charity calendar. I resisted this book at first because I've never been a fan of the heroine-is-engaged-to-the-wrong-man-but-falls-in-love-with-someone-else plot. Boy, am I glad I picked this book up, though. Michaels gives a tried and true plot a new twist, being careful to keep all of her characters both noble and true to themselves. Not only did I love all of those noble characters from Indy music loving Brooke to tortured Jake and even workaholic Giff, but I got wrapped up in the book's plot completely. I wanted to see how this heroine was going to get herself out of an incredibly sticky situation: falling in love with The Best Man in Texas. As usual, Tanya Michaels' story resonates with emotional undercurrents and sparkles with humor. This was a fun read with well-rounded characters, and I can easily recommend it. I can't wait for the sequel where the guy who loses Brooke's hand will get a happily ever after of his own.
