Set in Charleston during the years leading up to the War Between the States, The Belles of Charleston is a coming-of- age story about two sets of cousins: one set indentical twin boys, one set... This description may be from another edition of this product.
The Belles of Charleston is mainly about Jennie, Alexis, Lewis, and Franklin Belle, and Franklin's wife. I read this on my own volition as an eighth grader. We had a month where we could read a freebie, but when finished, we had to write an essay about the book concerning character development. I could not have chosen a better book to write about. As you delve into the story, you become attached to some of the characters, while there are others you just wish you could slap! Another good thing I would like to point out is that the characters don't seem like stuffy characters stolen right out of some cheesy period film from the '80s. They seem alive, as if this could be happening right now, right next door to you. I had the good fortune to meet the author, Steve Brown, two years ago in Myrtle Beach. Steve is a very down to earth person who really studies the time period in each of his novels. He is an expert on antebellum Charleston, as well as the other eras of his other novels. This adds a certain "quality" to the books. Overall, a good read! Can't wait for more from Steve!!!
