In this forbidden romance-at-sea, a beautiful young woman betrothed to the king of Scotland flees for Antwerp. The rugged commander of the Scottish flagship is sent to retrieve her, but instead falls for her mysterious beauty. Finding herself in the arms of the man she had hoped to avoid amidst the thick sea fog, the bride-to-be holds back her true identity. When her secrets come crashing down around them, will she choose freedom or her beloved Highlander?
The story here is completely over the top, and suspension of disbelief is 100% necessary from the first page (which introduces a RUNAWAY Queen). However, while in some books that is annoying, esp. when the author is attempting to be historically accurate but is just not, in this book it does not matter. This book is a pure fairytale, from the characters to the plot, and it is really beautiful and enjoyable. It is entertaining, the dialog is really thoughtful, and there are enough plot twists to keep you riveted to the very last page. I have re-read it a few times now over the years, and its one of my favorites.
This was a slow but wonderful read.

This book was not as spectacular as McGoldricks other books since her heroine was not of the strong woman type. She has written a wonderful story but it lacks the punch of Angel of Skye or The Thistle and the Rose but still a good read because McGoldrick has the ability to craft a good story with great details and that great way she has of bringing other characters from other books into the one you happen to be reading. McGoldrick gets good marks for this one. Can't wait to read more by her!!
