John Strawbridge is an incredible teacher and mentor whose time-tested insights and techniques are always on target. In all the time that I've been a student of his I've never once found his advice to be anything other than dead-on. The Audition Book is a literal gold mine that condenses all the major points that would otherwise require years of classwork to absorb, as was the case with the rest of us before he wrote it. I'm jealous! What he teaches, and the framework he uses to convey it, provides comprehensive answers to the questions we all have. He demystifies the process in all aspects, breaking its complex anatomy down to an accessible, comprehensible road map to the real destination: getting the job and doing it the way it needs to be done in order to keep getting more jobs. And, even better, his teachings dovetail with those of many other known teachers, synergizing what the student learns/ has already learned rather than causing him/ her to feel that s/he must choose one view over another. There are only a few individuals I've encountered who can truly crystalize the big and small pictures of the business of the big and small screen and John is one of them. It should probably be listed in the Self-help/ Therapy section at bookstores because actors who read it will experience a huge relief from the fog of unnecessary anxiety that most of us have erroneously taken for granted for far too long. I chose this book because it's just better: it offers step-by-step, hands-on, recommendations on EXACTLY how to prepare, what to do and what not to do, from preparing head-shots to follow-up. The author offers great insights after casting for Clint Eastwood, Jodie Foster, Ridley Scott, and on projects like Enemy of the State, Homicide: Life on the Streets, and over 30 others, which beats the heck out of the credentials of many other authors on the topic. Very cool book!
You WILL Learn From this Book!

I have not read this book. I have just purchased it. I have, however, taken two classes from John Strawbridge (and Gary Wheeler at Actors Company Theatre) and the classes were incredible! I have no doubt this book will be all that and more. If you are SERIOUS about improving your auditioning skills, understanding what an audition is and what a casting director is looking for (here's a hint: sometimes THEY don't know what they're looking for) then you will want this book. Careful - John is straight forward, honest, and tells it like it is. If "you can't handle the truth" then this book may not be for you. Buy it anyway. You'll be glad you did.
