Book Overview

From New York Times bestselling author Kate Quinn comes a gorgeously written fantastical adventure which poses the question: Have you ever wished you could live inside a book? Welcome to the Astral Library, where books are not just objects, but doors to new worlds, new lives, and new futures.

Alexandria "Alix" Watson has learned one lesson from her barren childhood in the foster-care system: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and knowing college is a pipe dream, Alix takes nightly refuge in the high-vaulted reading room at the Boston Public Library, escaping into her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of far-off lands. Until the day she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless, acerbic guardian of a hidden library where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives...inside their favorite books.

The Librarian takes a dazzled Alix under her wing, but before she can escape into the pages of her new life, a shadowy enemy emerges to threaten everyone the Astral Library has ever helped protect. Aided by a dashing costume-shop owner, Alix and the Librarian flee through the Regency drawing rooms of Jane Austen to the back alleys of Sherlock Holmes and the champagne-soaked parties of The Great Gatsby as danger draws inexorably closer. But who does their enemy really wish to destroy--Alix, the Librarian, or the Library itself?

Started strong but fizzled out

I love the premise of living in a book. I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of the book but then it took a turn and I grew bored with the storyline about the library board.

Libraries are magical

This book is definitely for the readers who get lost in stories to escape from the troubles of the real world. It is a strong message also for the power of libraries in helping others learn and have a place where they are welcome, no price tag needed. And how we must protect them from those who want to price everything and censor "dangerous ideas." That was a very strong message in this book (sometimes a bit too heavy handed) but it still has whimsy and magic and even dragons! Now, me, even though I love to read, I don't actually want to live in a book. What I would love to be true, is to go to the Astral Library and just read and have time stop until I need to leave again. That would be a dream come true! Also, I am sure I would be one of the resident ghosts because my TBR list is ever growing and I think an afterlife of reading to my hearts content sounds like heaven! lol Now for the story itself. It was a fun escape with the touch of magic and a bit of adventure following Alix as she ran through the books to save the library from some truly awful people who need to pick up a book themselves and open their closed minds! Along with the Librarian and a few cool acquaintances (would love to see some of Beau's creations!) who deserved even more mentions for how awesome he is, Alix finds a way to save the library and also figure out what she wants with her life. It was a fun book and I am glad I got the chance to read this. Also the cover is wonderful and magical and I love it!
