Graceful designs from a more artistic era

I think Art Nouveau is one of the most attractive schools of design ever invented, and this Dover book (new in English but with illustrations from an authentic French compendium of the period) will give you a good idea of why. Editor Roberta Waddell includes photographs of objects ranging from pendants and buckles to stair-rails, chandeliers, and stained-glass windows, to decorative vases, textiles, and whole suites of furniture, to houses and World's Fair pavilions, all in the distinctive delicate, graceful Nouveau style. She lets the illustrations speak for themselves rather than trying to explain Nouveau in words, and if you're not too sure what the style constitutes, this is the book to get hold of. If, on the other hand, you're a fan and enjoy seeing pictures of the best examples of Nouveau, it's a volume you definitely should have on your shelves. Designers, social historians, and art lovers will all find it a valuable addition to their collections.
