I used art and short poems, which I often sent via text message to very special friends, to help me make sense of my new world outside the troubled days I spent in Angola (1961-1994). This process was undoubtedly healing, offering me liberation from a harsh yet not entirely innocent past. The book discusses each of my paintings on canvas and explains why I created them. The latest edition of The Amateur contains a few more acrylic paintings and a sample of my most recent digital artwork. I don't make excuses for the quality of my paintings. For me, creating them - amateurish as they may be - was simply another challenge that helped me to lead a better life internally. This is an experience that many people can have, and it is something that I would like to share. However, painting alone was not enough for me; I also had to write about it. It worked. A few more books illustrate what I have produced so far. Phillip Reese
