Thanks to my Father, I have found a love of reading up on the Finnish Winter War and this is definitely one of the best. I recommend it (and so does he).
Definitive Novel of the Russo-Finnish War of 1939-40 (the Winter War)
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
This book has been described as the Definitive Novel of the Winter War and is the book on which the move Talvisota is based (the author was, incidentally, one of the script writers for the movie - no surprise there). Events of the Winter War are seen through the eyes of the novels main character, Martti Hakala, a soldier in the 23rd Infrantry Regiment, and largely take place in the fighting on the Karelian Isthmus near Lake Ladoga. The novel is apparantly based on actual war diaries, interviews with veterans and other first-hand sources, all of which, when combined with Tuuris terse writing style, combine to give the book a raw authenticity. Read this book and watch the movie and youll get an insight into what the war was like for the Finnish soldiers on the frontline. Its an insight that the histories and geo-political military-strategic overviews wont give you. If you are interested in the Russo-Finnish War, I would highly recommend this novel for the look at what it was like at an individual level and for an insight into the personal sacrifices made by the many Finnish soldiers who died to preserve their countries independance and freedom from Soviet tyranny. Well worth the read. Incidentally, there are a couple of other novels about the Russo-Finnish Wars you may find interesting if you enjoy this book. Try the following: Under the North Star 2: The Uprising by Vaino Linna (set in the Civil War of 1919); The Unknown Soldier by Vaino Linna (set in the Continuation War); Molotov Cocktail by John O Virtanen (Virtanen was a soldier in the Winter War and while fiction, the book seems to reflect many of his own personal experiences - worth the read if this is a subject that interests you);
