What would you do if...things that could kill you live in the tall grass?Would you run and hide? Would you evade and avoid? Would you become enraged and move to destroy? Would you ask for and expect... This description may be from another edition of this product.
The author and I are high school classmates. We were not in the same "crowd" in h.s. but knew one another and spoke to one another. At our 40th Class Reunion, we reintroduced ourselves and started to correspond. I read his book in one sitting. It was difficult because it was real, earthy, gutsy, horrific. He was in Viet Nam (and, basically, still is.) Just as are all of our Viet Nam veterans. We lived it. If you cannot "abide" four-letter words or raw, human emotions AND the truth, this book is not for you. I know one of our classmates, whose brother died in Viet Nam, started Tall Grass, put it down, and then decided to continue reading and forge through the emotions to the finish. It helped her to cope with her grief and better understand that segment of our history.
Tall Grass -- A realistic War Story
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
Tall Grass is an excellent read in order to discover the nitty gritty realities of day-to-day life during war. Some days are very slow; some days are packed with chaotic horror and unexpected death. Behind the mundane and the horror reside real people, most young boys aged 18 - 21 years; a 25 year old soldier would be considered an old and wise man. "Tall Grass" tells the story of these boys and men, and how they cope with fighting, staying alive, internal violence, and feelings and emotions they are only just discovering they possess. I highly recommend "Tall Grass" to those desiring to uncover some of the complexities of the Viet Nam war, and as an exploration of a general perspective on all wars, "good and bad."
Remembering the Viet Nam War era
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
War is hell- we all do well to remember that. This book gives a very human account of the experiences of certain fictional American soldiers in Viet Nam. It strikes a chord for those of us who lived through that era, who have known and loved people whose lives were changed by the Viet Nam war, offering a glimpse into what it was like there and how the experience affected some of the soldiers who served there. It's a good read, not overly heavy, with good characters and a realistic portrayal of life in that war.
