Talking Rubbish

"Talking Rubbish " is a photographic guide to an eclectic mix of items, most of which have been found locally around the coastline of Monifieth, Angus, Scotland. The finds from two local historic landfill sites, dating from the late Victorian/early Edwardian period which were disturbed during construction work, have also been documented. They give an insight into how people lived their lives, by what they ate and drank, what ailments they suffered from and items that were once someone's prized possessions. Many of the beach finds date from the last 100 years so it is entirely possible that they are escaping from historic landfill sites. Other finds are rather more modern but still provide a window to a more recent past as well, thanks to the indestructible properties of plastics.

It reflects upon the environmental damage caused by modern living and the impact of "disposable " products which have ended up washing up on beaches all around the UK and much further afield.

The effects on marine life and birds from litter, marine and plastic pollution and avian flu is also discussed as well as the impact of changing weather patterns, erosion and rising sea levels which are affecting us all.

This book raises awareness of what history literally lies beneath our feet. There is also an appreciation of the natural beauty to be found on our beaches. We must do our very best to protect them, both for marine life and for future generations. We all depend on the health of our oceans.
