Sweet Blood & Fury is essential reading for anyone with insulin-dependent, Type 1 diabetes. Anyone with Type 2 diabetes, or just with "high blood sugar" short of full-blown diabetes, will also find it invaluable. And if you are simply a person who loves someone with diabetes, you will find this book extremely helpful in understanding the emotional impact of this disease. The short summary of the book might be "It's okay to be angry about having diabetes, and in fact anger may help you to get the best treatment and keep yourself as healthy as possible." Mary Frances Connors has learned some very valuable lessons about being a strong advocate for one's own health care, and she's a compassionate teacher willing to bare her soul to share those lessons with us. We can relate to her very well because she's so human -- even though she's a registered nurse and highly self-educated about the nature of diabetes, she still has to fight off that urge to delve into a bag of cookies, and sometimes succumbs. She shows us how she -- and we -- can forgive ourselves and keep trying and working for the most optimal health and happiness we can achieve.
