As a result of demographic trends in our society, the demand for semi-residential care in the social and healthcare sectors will continue to rise. Most older people wish to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. In order to make this wish a reality, care services and framework conditions are needed that take this into account. Geriatric day centres are an important semi-residential service that enables people in need of care to continue living in familiar surroundings. Seven categories have been defined as structural quality criteria to achieve uniform quality standards for care in day centres (objectives, target groups with inclusion and exclusion criteria, care structure, planning, staffing levels and staff qualifications, infrastructure and range of services). The implementation of quality concepts and standards ensures quality of life, a zest for life and self-determination in old age. For this reason, the empowerment approach should be considered, which empowers and supports older people to recognise their health problems and find ways to cope with them.
