Book Overview

"An excellent book for all those who sincerely desire peace, both within themselves and the world."

- Arun Gandhi, Founder, M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence

Find balance, peace, and even wisdom, by learning to steady the mind.

Stress and anxiety affect many of us as we struggle with work pressures, money worries, strained relationships, and the nagging sense that life may be running out of our control. But a truly calm mind can weather any storm.

Eknath Easwaran, a respected teacher of meditation, offers a wealth of insights, real-life stories and practical suggestions to help us try something more successful next time we're facing our stressors. He explains how to use a mantram (or mantra) to quiet the mind. He describes how to slow down and stay in the present, improve creativity and concentration, shed anxieties and resentments, strengthen our relationships, and stay kind and strong when faced with conflicts, supporting those around us.

Easwaran (1910-1999) left a rich archive with thousands of recorded talks, as well as works in progress to be completed under the direction of his wife and editor, Christine Easwaran, Strength in the Storm is drawn from his essays and other previously unpublished material. Each chapter contains:
- An introduction, presenting Easwaran's timeless ideas in the light of today's challenges
- Easwaran's article, which is the main part of each chapter
- A workbook section to help get the most out of each article.

We learn to calm the mind through practice - there's no magic about it. We can't control what life throws at us, but we can learn to access the courage, patience, and compassion that we need to ride the waves of life minute-by-minute, day-by-day.

Survival 101

Strength in the Storm is a remarkable little book with six simple chapters each one focusing on a life lesson to help us survive all our difficult times. Written in down-to-earth language, it helps us put into practice skills which at first glance seem so easy, yet take constant focus to give us courage and strength. If you are going through a job loss, work conflict, money problems, relationship issues, a health crisis, this is the book for you. The pastor at our church has been preaching from this for five weeks now, the last lesson is next Sunday. I have learned so much from her and this book.

Great Book!

I purchased this book as a requirement for a class. After reading it I recommended it to several friends. Easwaran presents challanges to a person in changing there life by learning to slow down. There is something for everyone in this book whether you're looking for ways to better your life or just want an awakening to what's going on in your life, because it definitely has you take a good look at yourself. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Strength In The Storm by Eknath Easwaran is an unusually insightful collection of philosophical perception and societal interpretation of the everyday tedium encountered in the course of ordinary daily life. Introducing readers to an uncompromisingly conceptual and helpful system of ideals and coping techniques, Strength In The Storm astutely guides its readers through life's universal issues as they present themselves. Strength In The Storm is especially recommended reading for those who are searching for an instructive and "user friendly" guide for seeking happiness and obtaining contentment, as well as those who find themselves chronically unhappy with their daily struggle with situational stresses, relationships, or the seeming indifference of the world around them.
