The plot: Thomas Kowalski, a Detroit veterinarian who treats animals for free, is killed by the local gang controlling the neighborhood after refusing to pay "protection money." His daughter Maya-a combat medic and veteran of two tours in Afghanistan-discovers her father's secret diary and launches a nocturnal campaign against the gang's dog-fighting and extortion rackets, training a dog her father had rescued to serve as her partner. The story then expands into a larger conspiracy involving a real estate development company that is using the gang as a pawn to "clean up" the neighborhood on the cheap.
