Stone

(Book #1 in the The Metcalfes Series)

She cost him everything. Now, he's forced to protect her.

Stone Metcalfe embodies the Metcalfe legacy-blue eyes, an unfair amount of good looks, and hardcore patriot-laced character. But a foolish lapse in judgment dismantles his name and career. Humiliated and furious, he retreats to his mountain lodge to hide from media hounds and eke out a new life. However, one phone call from an old Army buddy upends Stone's...

Romantic Suspense with a Hefty Dose of Romance!!

4.5 STARS Kendig comes out of the gate with a strong start with STONE (The Metcalfes #1), tackling the tough subject of human trafficking with grace and finesse. As a bystander, I think I’ve only ever viewed the subject singularly but with this story my eyes have been opened to another aspect of this horrible crime and for that I’m still processing mentally and emotionally. It seems strange to use words like fabulous or amazing when writing a review for a book that tackles such a despicable subject but Kendig really is a master at weaving intricate plot lines. While there could have been a little more clarity for me on a couple of things, and maybe more grittiness than romance, I was still drawn completely into the story from the beginning. WILLOW is up next and I can’t wait to dig even deeper into this family! I’m highly anticipating the rest of the series. Canyon Metcalfe makes an awesome cameo!! He is my favorite Discarded hero and all-time favorite character of Kendig’s. More cameos surely must be forth coming to help fight this evil that has become such an integral part of the lives of these siblings. I was provided an early digital copy of the book. No review was required. No compensation was received.

Loving this series already!

"Stone was all about the choice, about the will." It's another winner from Ronie Kendig. I am totally loving this series already! This book is a little different from her previous books in that there is more emphasis on the deep-down emotions of love, regret, failure, and helplessness and the overwhelming and incredible power of forgiveness, grace, and redemption and less focus on fast-paced action and adrenaline (but there is definitely some of that toward the end of the book). It does address a very difficult topic of trafficking and delves into the terrible cycle of emotional, spiritual, and physical trauma that the victims endure; the author has done a great amount of research into the topic and addresses it with care and sensitivity. I loved getting to know Stone (and am reading the Discarded Heroes series now to get to know his younger self and his brother Canyon). He's methodical, loyal, dedicated, and a true protector. Brighton is a sweetheart with a loving, tender, and selfless spirit. Their backstory that unfolds through flashbacks and memories is bittersweet and heart-wrenching and sets up for their rocky path to reconciliation. The true villain is still unknown at this point in the series and I'm looking forward to getting to know the rest of the Metcalfe family as they chase down the elusive evil mastermind. Stone's younger brothers Canyon was featured in the Discarded Heroes series and Leif was featured in the Book of the Wars series but this book is definitely a stand-alone that can be enjoyed on its own. I received the book via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
