A hilarious contemporary fantasy about a junior sales witch stuck in corporate hell, who has to evade devilish pacts and her kickass, world-saving, demon-slaying mum to save a (surprisingly hot) demon, and work out how to hit her quarterly target. Morgan Blackwater's mother is a kickass, world-saving, demon-slaying Shadow Council wizard. As for Morgan? Morgan's a junior salesperson at a tech startup that can't even decide what its product is. But with magic dyslexia and a disinclination to kick ass, Morgan is doing her best carving out a niche for herself in the mundane world. Leaving work late one night, she discovers her boss dead from the effort of summoning a demon to trade his soul in order to make his quarterly target. The disturbingly-attractive demon, Lucareoth (Luke for short), is trapped here until he finds someone to sell their soul. While trying to sneak Luke out of the building, Morgan runs into her infamous mother. Apparently, someone has been summoning demons and she's here to get to the bottom of it. Trying to protect Luke from her mother, Morgan gets sucked into the Infernal Plane and discovers hell really is a corporate nightmare. She only gets back home with a promise to deliver a human soul of her own. While her coworkers are really annoying, she's not willing to sacrifice their souls. The company's tech bro CEO, though, is another story. With Caitlin Rozakis's signature wit, STARTUP HELL is a contemporary fantasy that exposes the demonic nature of the corporate world.
How many times has cubicle office life been compared to Hell? I mean it is true that sometimes it is soul draining where you feel like a tiny insignificant cog in the vast machine and only those at the top get the benefits. Not much would need to change for life on the infernal plane! So I can't blame Lucareoth for willing to do anything to meet his quota of souls and I really feel for him when his mark ends up dead!
Much like her previous book, The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association, the main character, Morgan is an outcast living on the fringes of the magical world, trying to make a living at a very sketchy tech startup. Luke certainly livens things up when he accidentally gets stuck on the mortal plane with Morgan but despite the dangers, plus a secret scheme to takes souls (needed for power on the infernal plane), there is still time for hijinks with Morgan's roommate and a perfectly lovely hell hound, changes at the office (goat yoga anyone? lol) and learning to accept that just being you, magical, or demon, is enough and they are allowed to find happiness in their own way (even if your mother is a totally awesome mage fighter!)
Whether you are reading this or listening to it via audiobook, you are in for a fun, lighthearted, cozy tale of acceptance no matter what plane you are from or magic level and you too can find a life you love and a love that can defy any force. This audiobook was well done with Megan Tusing back as an awesome narrator to bring Morgan and this crazy tale of life in the cubicle farms and a chance encounter with a demon and saving the world, or at least the souls of the world. I am so glad I got the chance to listen to this. Many thanks to Tantor Media and NetGalley for giving me the chance to do so!
