Stanley Kubrick, director of the acclaimed films Path of Glory, Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket, is arguably one of the greatest American filmmakers. Yet, despite being hailed as "a giant" by Orson Welles, little is known about the reclusive director. He's still out there, making movies...

This is an excellent and exhaustive bio despite the fact that Kubrick is a diehard recluse with fiercly loyal friends and familly that never talk about him... espcially to writers. But somehow, Lobrutto has managed to lift the vail of secrecy and silence that shrouds the Kubrick kingdom and give us a tantalizing view of this self-exiled genius at work behind the camera, and even in his English castle. How Lobrutto has managed to make the life of a filmmaker who never leaves home for years at time seem exciting is beyond my understanding. But the author does it, and does it with style. A must read for anyone interested in the world's greatest, most respected, and often most misunderstood filmmaker.

Kubrick's Mind: A Guided Tour

This book reveals the method behind the madness of which is Stanley Kubrick. The references and recollections by acquaintances, production partners and relatives gives new insight into the development of this important cinematic auteur. As I rescreened the films, the book served as a behind the scenes guide informing me to unknown details

most unraveling considering the director's reclusiveness.

I have never had my curiosity satisfied better than with this biography. For all the abilities which Kubrick posseses (i.e. the ability to deliver a theme and message where visuals are so strongly and uniquely manifested, that a dialogue could just as well be nil), my thirst for information on Kubrick the man was no less strong than that of an addict's craving. This piece of literature has finally met my inquisitive desire right where it burned the most (in the mind of the aspiring director and film addict that I am). I grew up watching 2001: A Space Odessey, for my father professed nothing but. And to be able to put a human side and enter the mind of the world's most elusive filmmaker is enough to feel like a new form of contact has been made

As meticulous and well-crafted and the subject's films!

Stanley Kubrick has has remained a mythical figure in modern film UNTIL NOW. This book deconstructs the myths and rumors, substituting them with the facts. I've heard that this is the first full-fledged bio on Kubrick, and all I can say is...what took so long?! The author painstakingly recalls Kubrick's early years and rise to his current status, while keeping me fascinated. Great book
