Standing Still

On a December night in Chicago, fashion influencer Adri Jackson's life ends in a way the world decides she will not come back from.

The world is wrong.

By morning, the crash on Lake Shore Drive is the front page of every paper in the country. The boyfriend she had loved for three years sells his version of the story to Today. Three point two million followers turn on her in forty-eight hours. The brands vanish. The penthouse on the lake becomes a Logan Square sublet with a brick-wall window and a clanking radiator. The woman the country had thought it knew becomes, overnight, the woman the country has decided to be done with.

By February she is working off four hundred hours of court-ordered community service at a women's shelter on Devon Avenue, sorting cashmere donations on the floor in a sweater that no longer fits, with her phone in a Tupperware bin marked VOLUNTEERS and her name no longer attached to anything anyone is willing to sell.

She does not expect to meet Ward Krutilla there.

Ward is a third-year internal medicine resident at Loyola, a widower, a former Division One baseball pitcher who runs the free walk-in clinic at the shelter on Tuesdays in a navy quarter-zip and a heavy old Rolex he does not, on principle, take off. He is not looking for anything. He is not, by any reasonable accounting, ready. But on a Tuesday in February, in a break room with a flickery light and two paper cups of bad coffee, a woman walks in with a thermos.

This is the slow patient story of a young woman finding her way back to a version of herself she had thought was lost. It is the story of Adri Jackson learning, in increments, on Tuesdays, in donation rooms, in break rooms, in hospital corridors, on the brick sidewalks of Logan Square in April, how to love yourself again. It is about reclaiming a voice in a world that has decided what your voice is. It is about the difference between the night that broke you and the slow work that puts you back together. It is about hope as a discipline, and about being seen at the exact moment of being ready to be seen.
