SQUALL CANTICLE

By Ewa Chrusciel

Poetry that gives voice to victims of global violence and meditates on the boundaries between tragedy and beauty.

Ewa Chrusciel's fifth book in English, SQUALL CANTICLE explores polyphonic grief that includes the personal, communal, and ethical as it asks what poetry can do when one is faced with violence and the suffering of innocents. Throughout this collection, we hear from marginalized voices: the persecuted lemur aye-aye species, the grieving orca Tahlequah, as well as Ukrainian and Palestinian mothers who must bury their children.

The images "squall" and "canticle" play against each other--the violence of a storm meets the sanctity of a hymn--as the author tries to reconcile beauty and wound, gentleness and violence.

Including prose poems, question-and-answer poems, and free verse across ekphrastic and ars poetica forms, SQUALL CANTICLE weaves a contrapuntal meditation on exile, bewilderment, and belonging.
